Paul is Patsy's deaf brother, played by Zachary Best,
who is also deaf in real life. He leaves the show early, just before
Zandra's abortive wedding to Lex in Ep.17. His disappearance is never
explained, though Patsy blames Lex for mistreating him. In real life
the most common explanation is that Zachary Best was homesick. |

We first meet Paul as one of three Kids (Paul,
Patsy, Cloe) with Salene, playing in a recreation area. They
meet up with Amber and Dal by chance, after Cloe has been rescued
by them from certain pick-up by the Locos. After an unpleasant
encounter with Lex, and narrowly escaping getting caught in
an intertribal fight between the Locos and Demon Dogz, they
all find themselves in a deserted shopping mall. Lex and his
group (Ryan and Zandra) join the group next day, soon followed
by Bray and a heavily pregnant Trudy. |
|
|
We soon learn that Paul's deafness is compensated
by an increased awareness of vibrations, almost a sixth sense.
He was the first to "hear" or sense that there was
an intruder (Bray) in the sewers.
Everyone sleeps in the same room at first, and Paul is next
to Patsy his sister. |
|
|
Food is scarce, and when Trudy joins the group,
Salene explains to Patsy and Paul why they must learn to expect
less food, the more so after her baby has been born.
Paul and Patsy soon learn that Lex is an insufferable bully.
Lex has no time for Paul, and refers to him as a "deafo".
They are kicking a ball to each other by the grille
when Lex takes exception to their noise. He shouts into Paul's
face "Read my lips, SHUT UP - you got it?" |

Paul
& Patsy blackmail Jack |
|
|
Paul and Patsy soon discover that Jack supplements
his rations from a secret food stash in the Service Area. To
prevent them from telling Lex about it, Jack has no choice but
to share it whenever they are hungry.
Trudy goes into labor and gives birth to a girl. Paul and Patsy
find the idea of Trudy breast feeding quite hilarious. |
|
|
|
|
In Ep.5 Paul & Patsy pick the lock on Jack's
food store and help themselves. Bingeing themselves stupid,
they throw up, making a mess in the Furniture store. It's Cloe
who tells Amber. The immediate thought is they might have the
Virus, until Dal finds all the junk food wrappers.
Zandra decides to move out, away from the mess. She chooses
the Lingerie store.
Jack of course discovers his food store looted, and the doors
carelessly left open. This must not happen again. |
|
|
Next time when Paul and Patsy feel hungry they
find that Jack has upgraded to an electronic lock. Not even
Paul can crack this one! Jack has been hiding, waiting to enjoy
the moment!
We see a very kindly side to Paul in Ep.7. when the 3 kids play
a game. Cloe becomes quite upset, because it reminds her of
similar times at home with her family. Paul goes over to her
to comfort her. Amber cannot answer their question, why the
adults had to die. |

Lex makes life so difficult for Trudy that she
agrees to a secret meeting with Zoot, arranged by Bray. It turns
out that Zoot is the baby's father, not Bray as everyone at
the Mall assumes. Bray hopes to persuade Zoot to give up his
warrior lifestyle as leader of the Locos, to become a responsible
father and look after Trudy and his baby.
Paul senses an intruder in the sewers (just as he once did with
Bray). He and Patsy wake Lex, but Lex's immediate response is
that "Paul is a deafo." When Bob barks in confirmation,
Lex and Ryan head toward the sewers. Bray tries to explain the
situation, that Zoot is alone and unarmed, come to see his daughter,
but Lex now considers Bray to be a traitor and Zoot as an unconditional
enemy. There's a fight on the balcony where Zoot falls to his
death.
Immediately after Zoot falls to his death, Lex swaggers about,
bragging that by killing Zoot, he just saved the Mallrats, and
exposed Bray as a traitor. Paul is anxious to claim his small
part, as is Ryan. However once Trudy is allowed to explain that
Zoot came unarmed, and had come to see her and his baby, and
how Bray looked after her when she ran away from the Locos,
sympathy swings away from Lex and toward Bray. Lex shifts his
account toward Zoot's death being an accident.
In the café Salene gives the three kids drinks in preparation
to get them back to bed. Paul now feels guilty, for by warning
Lex, he caused the death of Trudy's baby's father. Salene assures
Paul that he "did good". |

Paul
& Patsy play poker - Ep.9 |
After Salene discovers rats in the Café, Amber
tries to introduce a chores roster, whereby everyone must contribute
to keeping the place clean.
From the start people find get-outs, and ways to offload their chores
onto other people.
Ryan offers to teach Paul and Patsy to play poker. They play for matchsticks
at first, and he lets them win. Then after offering higher stakes,
like chores, Ryan plays to win. Before long, Ryan has offloaded his
next 4 days' chores onto Paul and Patsy.
There's a similar story with Jack. He takes advantage of their hunger
and offers them food in exchange for cleaning the windows. |
|
|
Things get serious in Ep.10 when Paul and Patsy
play Poker again with Ryan. This time they play for food, and
as before, Ryan is a much better player. Twice, Patsy is forced
to go get supplies from Jack to stay in the game. The second
time Ryan follows her, while Lex guards the table.
While they are gone, Lex rearranges the cards in Paul's favor
so that he will win. But there's a catch - Amber has challenged
Lex to a leadership election. In return for winning the poker
game, Paul must vote for Lex! |
|
|
|
|
As soon as Ryan discovers Jack's food stash he
tells Lex about it. For now, Lex uses this knowledge to his
advantage, blackmailing Jack into voting for him in the upcoming
election. With so many Mallrats under threat and blackmail from
Lex, he inevitably becomes leader, and it's Ryan again who lets
slip to everyone that Jack has a secret food store. Lex is obliged
to put Jack on trial. Paul and Patsy vote "not guilty",
making the result 5:4 not guilty. |

Bray
brings new pets for the Kids - Ep.13 |
Fearful that Salene has been using babycare as
a means to have more contact with Bray, Trudy bans her from
all contact with either. Amber suggests she might give the kids
music lessons as an alternative pastime to occupy her mind.
As a result Paul and Patsy receive piano tuition, but when they
come to demonstrate their progress, Salene doesn't seem at all
interested. Truth is Salene is totally preoccupied by thoughts
of Bray. |
|
|
Cloe loses her pet calf Bluebell while trying
to protect her from hungry Lex. Bray brings home some chickens,
to help make up, though Cloe is still lost in the woods. Cloe
will later call her favorite 'Henrietta' and Patsy will call
hers 'Clara'.
Patsy is terribly upset that Cloe still hasn't come home. To
take the kids' minds of things, Zandra decides to give them
a makeover, and since Salene looks depressed she offers to style
her hair at the same time. But Salene isn't in the mood and
says so. Jokingly Paul calls her a "grumpy pants!"
This is enough to send Salene disgruntled out the room. |
|
|
|
|
Lex leads a search party to find Cloe, but since
he insists they concentrate on the City rather than the woods
as Bray wanted, they come back empty-handed.
The following day, the water situation is so severe the Mallrats'
top priority is to fetch water from the stream. Paul and Patsy
are upset, for it seems Amber has abandoned the search for Cloe. |
|
|
Fortunately Cloe meets Tai-San in the woods, and
together they come back to the Mall. Paul is the first to greet
her and he races up to Trudy's room to inform Bray. |
|
|
Zandra's
Wedding and the disappearance of Paul - Ep.17 |
Zandra has taken Tai-San's advice and talked Lex
into marrying her. Cloe and Patsy are her bridesmaids; Paul
also has a role as pageboy, but Patsy cannot find him. Zandra
wants to proceed without him. Suddenly she spots Ebony in the
mall and screams. It turns out that Ebony has followed Bray,
thinking she might learn what happened to Zoot.
The wedding is called of, and as for Paul, he is never seen
again. Patsy is terribly upset, and largely blames Lex, suspecting
that his mistreatment of "the deafo" caused Paul to
leave. |
|
|
Amber and Bray make the occasional reference to
going out to look for Paul, but to all intents and purposes
Paul's role in the Tribe has simply come to an abrupt end without
any explanation. Other characters will follow suit, including
Patsy (S3), Charlie, Cloe, Ved (S4)
In Ep.22 KC joins the show, effectively replacing Paul. He is
about the same age though characterwise he couldn't be more
different. This includes his relationship with Lex. Whereas
Lex bullied Paul mercilessly, he will groom and support KC as
his coconspirator in a wide variety of scams. |
